Film Culture Excursion: LITTLE WOMEN

What:

It’s time to get back into the swing of film trips!  After talking to a lot of you, there seems to be great interest in catching some of the Oscar-y films you haven’t been able to see yet, namely LITTLE WOMEN and 1917.  Since 1917 is still going strong at the box office, I’d guess LW is the better bet to catch first before it leaves theatres.  Also, it’s pretty great.

We’re going to do a Sunday trip this time because Gregory is running a Museum of the American Revolution trip on Saturday (you should go, it’s a cool museum!).  We’ll be doing the 1:30 PM show at the AMC Fashion District 8 (1001 Market Street), Philly’s newest theatre.  We’ll be meeting in the VP lobby at 12:30 PM.  That’s a pricier theatre so we will be collecting a $4 co-pay; please have cash (no coins).  If you plan to come, please RSVP by 4 PM Friday.

LITTLE WOMEN is Greta Gerwig’s adaption of the classic Louisa May Alcott novel, starring Saoirse Ronan, Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Laura Dern, Meryl Streep, Timothee Chalamet, Eliza Scanlon and Chris Cooper.  It’s a great companion to Karissa’s adaptation series, since Gerwig had the challenge of adapting a novel that has already been translated to the screen six times; her approach not only modernizes the tone, but also restructures the timeline and incorporates more of Alcott’s biographical details directly into the work (quite a bit of it already factored into the novel, but in this version Jo (Ronan) and Alcott are more significantly conflated, foregrounding the whole as the portrait of an artist as a young woman).  Gerwig won the prestigious scripter award, which is bestowed upon the best work of adaptation in a given year.  LITTLE WOMEN was nominated for six Oscars, including picture, actress, supporting actress and screenplay, winning for costume design (Gerwig’s non-nomination for Best Director stirred up much controversy).  Perhaps more surprisingly, the film has been an unexpected box office smash, collecting more than a 100 million in the US alone.
