Film Culture Excursion: 1917

What:

Many of you have told me that you still haven’t seen 1917 and are dying to see it.  But quite a few of you have seen it already.  So what to do?  We’re doing a joint trip Saturday where you have a choice of two films with similar showtimes!

Choice #1: 1917 is Sam Mendes’ gripping, smash hit WWI adventure tale, told through a series of long takes.  It’s technically superb, immersive cinematic experience that is certainly best appreciated on the big screen.  It won the BAFTA (the British equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Picture of 2019 and took home Oscars for cinematography, sound mixing and visual effects.  Here’s the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZjQROMAh_s  We’ll be seeing the 12:15 screening Saturday at the AMC Dine-In Theatre downtown.  Please RSVP at https://gregory.house.upenn.edu/event/film-culture-excursion-1917 by Friday at 4 PM.

Choice #2: INVISIBLE MAN, the latest remake of the classic horror tale inspired by HG Wells’ novel… sure looked terrible to me, despite ultra-talented Elizabeth Moss in the lead.  BUT the early reviews are shockingly terrific, with many complimenting the way the source material has been reworked for the #metoo age. So let’s find out!  Here’s the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSBsNeYqh-k.   We’ll be seeing the 12 PM screening Saturday at the AMC Dine-In.  RVP to https://gregory.house.upenn.edu/event/film-culture-excursion-invisible-man by 4 PM Friday.

For either choice, we will be meeting at 11:15 sharp in the VP lobby.  Co-pay is $4.  Remember that if you RSVP and don’t show (and we don’t have another taker for your ticket) you are responsible for the full ticket price.  So check your schedule before RSVPing (and set your alarm).

I’ll figure out the discussion plan once I know the numbers!
