Deutsches Haus

What:

German House (GRMN 180-001) is an immersive language class designed to playfully introduce you to a range of topics that are left aside in typical textbook classes. German House is open to all Penn students with language skills of all levels and may be taken for 0.5 credits per semester. German House does not require you to do any homework or take exams. The only prerequisite to join German House is that you are courageous enough to speak German, and only German, for two class periods per week.

Here is some more important information about German House:

1.)
About the class times: PennInTouch has the class times from last fall (T&R 6-7pm). Please note that the class times this semester are Monday 5-6pm and Wednesday 6-7pm as indicated on the German House website. All meetings will be held virtually and there will be only one Zoom link that will let you access our meeting all semester long. Please email me or sign up for the class to receive the Zoom link.

2.)
As for our first meeting, I have decided to give all of us Wednesday, 9/2 off so we can get settled in the semester a bit before adding German to our plates. Monday, 9/7 (Labor Day) will be off, too, so our first meeting will not happen until Wednesday, September 9th. It will be the introductory meeting in which we’ll check in after the summer, play some games to break the ice, and get to know each other. I am so excited to meet all of you in German House this fall. Some of our first meeting may be held in English but please note that we will speak exclusively German in class once we have established the level of proficiency.

3.)
I am attaching the German House syllabus to this email. You can see an overview of the kinds of events in German House and read up on my Zoom policy and grading criteria there. It also has a detailed calendar of events you can expect in German House this fall (note that some Monday sessions are 90minutes long but therefore there will be no Wednesday sessions that week). In general, I keep the Monday „Tagesthemen” slot pretty open for news and events that happen throughout the semester. 2020 has been full of surprises, so who knows what else will be coming up! Please keep in mind that things can change as we go but I will always inform you of changes ahead of time. I also want to encourage you to suggest topics that you’re personally interested in to me.
