| Gregory uses its own distinctive housing
system for current residents who wish to return
the following year (note: incoming freshmen
interested in the House should follow the room
request instructions supplied by
Housing and Conference Services). In
keeping with Gregory’s small size and big
spirit, we employ a point system that rewards
time spent within the House, as well as various
forms of service to our community: |
|
Point System (higher is
better)
Years in House
+1/2 per semester in residence at Gregory
College House
Service
+1/2 per semester of Gregory Manager service
+1/2 per year of Gregory ITA service
+1/2 per year on the Gregory House Council
+1/2 for at least one full year of service at
Gregory information center
+1/4 per officially recognized Gregory community
service activity
MLP Participation.
Only residents who sign the MLP agreement clause
can live in Class of 1925. Only current MLP
residents assessed as 'participatory' by
appropriate language Program Directors can
return to Cl'25 (others can return to Van Pelt).
|
Process
The Housing process runs for a full week, with
each day corresponding to a specific room type.
Residents who wish to return should apply at the
Van Pelt Information Center according to the
following schedule. For Van Pelt Manor groups,
only one member needs to fill out the
application; in Class of 1925, all applicants
must sign the MLP contract on the reverse side
in order for the application to be processed.
Offers will be posted by the next afternoon, so
that residents who do not receive their desired
room type can re-apply for a different one if
they wish. |

Check back the following
afternoon/evening for your offer (if any).
If you accept the offer, each member of your
group must complete the Department of Housing
and Conference Services Occupancy Agreement on
that day (failure to do so may involve losing
your offer to another applicant).
Groups who fill all the spaces in their desired
apartment type (i.e. four people for a quad
room, two for a double), always receive
priority. In case of ties, current residents
automatically retain, provided the room is
unreserved for specific programs or class years;
if no one is retaining, a lottery determines
assignment.
Questions
Q: This point system is weird. Does it go by
the person in our group with the highest number
of points?
A: No. We combine the points of all members in
the group for one total score. So there could
be a disadvantage to bringing in applicants from
outside the house.
Q: Ah, but we can have people from outside the
House?
A: Yes, so long as at least one member of the
group is a current resident.
Q: But I have friends elsewhere who would like
to live in the House, just not with me. Can't
they apply?
A: They would apply during the centralized
Inter-House room change period, usually in
February, via campus express (campusexpress.upenn.edu).
Q: But all of my friends are going off campus!
I'd still like to live here, but I can't afford
a single. Do I have any options?
A: You can still apply on the appropriate day
for doubles or quads. You would be assigned
after all groups that do have the appropriate
number of people, but we would still assign
you. Be aware, though, that Housing will fill
the other spaces in your apartment at some
point, and might be slow to notify you.
Q: I only want to live here if I get
such-and-such a room. How do I make that clear?
A: For the final question on the Application,
check NO, you will not consider any room of the
desired type. If we don't have the specific
rooms you request, we will not assign you.
Q: I like Class of 1925 better! Can I live
there if I'm not interested in languages?
A: No, you can only apply for Cl'25 if you agree
to take part in the Modern Languages Program and
fill out the MLP Agreement on the reverse side
of the application. Here are the terms: By
signing below, I indicate that I understand and
subscribe to the residential mission of the
Modern Languages Program: to enhance language
skills and cultural awareness through regularly
scheduled language-based activities including
dinner tables, weekly coffee hours, and biweekly
film viewings. Interest and frequent
participation in these activities is required to
live in MLP, except where designated by the
House Dean, and neglecting them could lead to
relocation from the Class of 1925.
Q: Speaking of programs, how do I join FILM
CULTURE?
A: Just fill in your email address on the
reverse side of the
application. It doesn't matter what room
(or which building) you live in.
Q: Speaking of fun things to join, how about
HOUSE COUNCIL?
A: Same as above. We probably didn't need to
include these questions, did we?
Q: Are all the rooms available?
A: No. We have numerous designated freshmen
spots in Van Pelt (on the third and fourth
floors) and need to have enough freshman spots
in MLP. But that doesn't mean we will have to
turn people away; usually we can offer something
to all applicants. We also cannot allow
retentions in the reconfigured double in Cl'25
(101).
Q: So I filled out an agreement and have a
room. Still, I might want to try my luck
elsewhere to see if I can get a four bedroom
quad in the High Rises or something like that.
But I can keep this assignment as my safety
valve, right?
A: No. You cannot apply for another process,
here or anywhere in the College House system,
unless you cancel your assignment and pay the
cancellation fee. If you apply for another House
and do not get the room type that you want, you
can try to find a space here at that time,
though there is a chance that we will be at full
occupancy. Again, this is Housing policy, not
something we came up with.
Q: What's the deal with MENTORING?
A: Gregory has a rich history of mentoring, as
upperclassmen regularly take freshmen under
their wing and provide academic help, as well as
more general life and Penn advice. We formalize
this process by allowing our returners to
self-identify themselves as mentors in specific
fields or for general advice. A core team of
mentors is selected out of the returning class
and advertised to incoming freshmen starting
with Facebook
over the summer. |
