Wong Kar-Wai's elegant, refined “In the Mood for Love,” one of the most critically revered films of the decade thus far, depicts a quiet romance between neighbors (Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung) in adjoining apartments in 1962 Hong Kong, who discover their spouses are having an affair and are uncertain how to act, bound by social codes and their own sense of reserve and decorum. Glorious cinematography (by Christopher Doyle and Pin Bing Lee) and costumes create an atmosphere of dreamy sensuality; this is certainly not a traditional Hollywood romance, full of gimmicks and forced resolutions, but is instead about atmosphere and subtle emotion.
Followed by discussion.
