IT'S ALL IN A DAY Film Series
Dog Day Afternoon
(US, 1975)
125 minutes
Directed by: Sidney Lumet
Starring: Al Pacino, Charles Durning, and Chris Sarandon.
A gripping true crime yarn, a juicy slice of overheated New York atmosphere, and a splendid showcase for its young actors, Dog Day Afternoon is a minor classic of the 1970s. Al Pacino plays Sonny, who, along with his rather slow-witted accomplice Sal, holds hostages after a botched a bank robbery. Sonny finds himself transformed into a rebel celebrity when his standoff with police (including lead negotiator Charles Durning) is covered live on local television.

Don’t have your own mug to bring? You can also purchase this year’s bargain-priced edition of the official Gregory mug. Payne, director of "Election" and "About Schmidt," received the best reviews of his career with this critically worshipped adaptation of the Rex Pickett novel about two not-particularly-successful friends on a tour through California wine country. Sad-sack Miles (Paul Giamatti) is all about the wine; his buddy Jack (Thomas Haden Church) is fretting about his pending marriage and has other items on his agenda, including a fling with fiery Stephanie (Sandra Oh, from "Grey's Anatomy"). The caustic script has a number of instantly classic passages, especially a beautiful moment where Miles and Stephanie's lovely friend Maya (Virginia Madsen) use the intricacies of wine appreciation as a code to discuss their own romantic histories and yearnings. Payne and co-writer Jim Taylor won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay; Haden Church and Madsen received acting nominations.
