ASL House

American sign language is the language for many Deaf and hearing people within the United States, Canada and other parts of the world, but is not universal. It is the goal of ASL House to immerse students in a “Voices-off” setting that fortifies their existing skills in the language as well as developing new abilities. There is no previous knowledge required to join ASL house meetings, but coming prepared with some basic fingerspelling and patience is greatly appreciated! Meetings are typically held in the piano lounge or the beach between the two Gregories (if weather permitting). Meetings are held twice a week and are typically an hour long.

Our meetings also touch on the topic of Deaf culture and other current issues currently in the Deaf community. To help support this learning, ASL house works closely with Upenn’s ASL club,Penn In Hand, to take part in “Deaf events” in and around campus (see photos for two of our experiences). Feel free to stop by and learn something new about this amazing language.
